Welcome to The Jaws Vault
Thanks for stopping by! I have been fascinated with the movie Jaws from the moment my brother and I saw it on the opening night in Orlando, June 20th, 1975. We wanted to see the 7:20 showing, but when we arrived at the theater, the ticket line was around the building. We were fortunate enough to get two of the few remaining tickets for the 9:30 showing. It was an incredible movie, but I think my brother and I viewed the movie a little different than most of the people in the theater. I'll explain.
I was born in Bradenton Florida, just south of Tampa Bay. My father was an avid shark fisherman and one of the earliest scuba divers in the area. He had a wooden hull trawler called the Katy II that he kept in a slip at a marina on Anna Maria Island. Looking back, I can see quite a resemblance between the Katy II and The Warlock (the boat that became the Orca). Some of my earliest memories are fishing in Tampa Bay, the same waters where Oscar the Tiger Shark was caught (A whatttttt?) I caught my first shark at the age of 6, a 2' foot Bonnethead, and I became a Certified Open Water Scuba Diver at the age of 16. For the next 55+ years my brother and I have shark fished virtually the entire coast of Florida, both the Gulf and the Atlantic. It's hard to remember a time when I didn't own a boat.
So, as I watched the movie back in 1975, I understood Quint and I could relate to him. I still say the part in the movie where Quint hears the clicker on the Penn Senator slowly begin to click is something you have to experience to truly appreciate! It will make the hair on the back of your neck stand up!
